CBD has garnered much attention as a natural alternative to conventional medicine for many health conditions. It is now legal in South Africa and approved by the South African Health Professionals Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) which is really good news for those looking for a complementary health solution to target a variety of health concerns naturally.

Here we expose the myths surrounding CBD and get to the facts so that we can uncover any questions that may still be top of mind for you. We answer some of our most commonly asked questions including “What is CBD?”, “How can CBD benefit me?” and so much more.

What is CBD?17
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a cannabinoid and is just 1 of 100 naturally occurring chemicals found in the cannabis or marijuana plant.

THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinolis, is a different kind of cannabinoid. This is the psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, and causes the sensation of getting “high” that’s often associated with marijuana.
Unlike THC, CBD found in ADCO CBD is not psychoactive and will not give you a feeling of being “high”.
So if you’re looking for relief of common health ailments and a feeling of overall well-being without the mind-altering effects one can experience from marijuana, then CBD is an option that may appeal!
How does CBD work in the body?18
Have you heard of the endocannabinoid system? Yes! We said “endo-cannabinoid”, the same cannabinoid or naturally occurring chemical compound found in the cannabis or marijuana plant is also found inside our own bodies!

It’s quite a complex signaling system within our bodies and, although a lot of us may have never heard of it, it is actually a master regulatory system mediating our physiological state of balance or homeostasis.

In fact it’s truly a complete body system with receptors found in the brain, lungs, muscles, gastrointestinal tract, reproductive organs, cardiovascular system, immune system, spleen, liver, pancreas, bones, and skin – just to name a few!

It’s this expansive systemic footprint throughout our bodies that explains why phytocannabinoids like CBD have been shown to elicit wide-ranging health effects. When our endocannabinoid is not in balance we may experience a negative impact on our health so this is why targeted supplementary therapy with CBD – a phytocannabinoid – can work to support our endocannabinoid system and maintain homeostasis in our bodies.
How do you take CBD?18
Our ADCO CBD products are available in a range of formats and sizes. In addition to CBD oil drops, ADCO CBD offers capsule, gel and pastille delivery forms.

CBD oil drops are the original and perhaps the most commonly known format. To take CBD oil, use the dropper to place the correct dose into your mouth, holding it there for up to a minute. CBD oil can also be mixed into food and drinks so inclusion in one’s morning smoothie is another very convenient way in which to dose daily.
Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate – what’s the difference?18
CBD products come in 3 different formats - full-spectrum CBD oils, broad-spectrum CBD and CBD isolate.18 It’s really quite simple to explain!

Full-spectrum CBD incorporate all of the compounds present in the hemp plant, other cannabinoids (including no more than 0.3% THC), terpenes, flavonoids, and essential fatty acids.18

Broad-spectrum CBD is achieved by further distilling hemp extract to remove traces of THC. So, broad-spectrum products are simply full-spectrum just minus the THC.18

And then there’s CBD isolate! ADCO CBD products all contain CBD isolate. This is pure, concentrated CBD, with no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or essential fatty acids.18 When it comes to ADCO CBD – this is our difference! Our products provide pure CBD isolate in every drop, capsule, gel and pastille.1,14,15,16
What are the benefits of CBD?
Thanks to its good safety profile and the lack of psychoactivity, CBD is the phytocannabinoid with a lot of reported beneficial pharmacological effects, ranging from analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, to the reduction of anxiety, lifting of mood and improvement in sleep.8 In addition, CBD has been shown to maintain and enhance general health.4

In an online survey, almost 62% of CBD users reported using CBD to treat a medical condition, particularly pain, anxiety and depression.19 Interestingly, most people surveyed reported that CBD relieves their symptoms effectively by itself and without serious side effects.19
Can CBD ease the pain I feel?20
Remember the endocannabinoid system we spoke about a few FAQs earlier? It’s our master regulatory system that mediates a variety of physiological functions such as sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response.

Studies have reported that CBD may help to reduce chronic pain through its effect on endocannabinoid receptor activity in the body and thereby reducing inflammation and interaction with neurotransmitters (pain receptors).

The research on CBD products for chronic pain management has shown positive results and CBD has been shown to be a promising alternative particularly for chronic pain sufferers that rely on pain medication for relief. Pain medicines like opioids can be habit forming and their side effects can trigger other undesirable health conditions.

A natural therapy, like CBD, is certainly the best scenario in the long term for the management of pain caused by chronic conditions!
Can CBD ease my feelings of stress and anxiety?
Stressed? Stress can be a positive driver to get things done however chronic stress can affect your health and wellbeing.21 Some people may experience digestive symptoms, headaches, sleeplessness, sadness, anger, or irritability as result of on-going stress.21 Over time, continued stress may cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or mental illness so it’s a good idea to find stress management options that work well for you.21

CBD products like ADCO CBD have anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties, which means that they relieve anxiety caused by stress.8 CBD is reported to relieve other stress symptoms too including muscular tension, poor concentration, restlessness, sleep disturbances and fatigue.8 It does all this without causing that ‘high’ feeling!8

Remember to consult with your healthcare professional before combining CBD with any existing medication.
What is a quality CBD product?
Unfortunately, not all CBD products are created equal, so make sure to check the ingredients label.22

One study revealed that only about 31% of online CBD products are accurately labelled for CBD content.22 Careful selection of a CBD product is step one for safety and potential efficacy.22
